Light up a smile

The “Light up a smile” initiative, supported by the Vivere senza dolore (Living without pain) Association (President Marta Gentili) in collaboration with the Maruzza Foundation, is a pilot project aimed at promoting enhanced effectiveness of pain assessment and treatment for paediatric inpatients in Italy. A multi-disciplinary Steering Committee (comprised of doctors, bioethicists, policy makers, journalists and nurses) headed by Dr. Franca Benini, a leading pain management expert and Head of the palliative care team of Padua’s children’s hospice, is working to create assessment tools and treatment protocols that will be implemented by healthcare teams operating on children’s wards throughout the country. This project is symbolised by a collection of bedside lamps designed and created by the children treated on the paediatric wards participating in the project.

During the next Project meeting to be held in Rome in October, the Steering Committee will meet to establish the methodologies and procedures to undertake in the selected areas in order to gauge the levels of assessment and management of pain in children throughout Italy.
